And here it is, all spruced up. I carefully brought it into just intonation and harmonized it. This cut has a synth bass, exactly tuned to the just intervals. The only equal-tempered instrument is the guitar. It’s slightly in the background, so the voices and bass establish the tuning in the ear.

I think it’s a lovely cut. It’s still a sketch. Now to move on to another song and come back to this one next time around. Smooth sailing!

Smooth Sailing 11-17

I spent today combing through this one, harmonies, structure and lyrics. Here is a guitar and vocal version, which I’ll build on.

Doo-wop Mansion

I’ve been pounding away at 35 Square Foot Mansion for a few days now, trying to squeeze all of the ideas that sing in my head onto the tape. I decided to try singing all the parts to work them out and clarify the arrangement. Voila! The a cappella version. Enjoy!

The Cove, two parts

I’m in Steve Key‘s “best of 2011” showcase on November 21st, and so is Shannon Savage. Shannon is going to be so kind as to join me for the Cove. I’m really looking forward to it. Here’s the work tape, I’m singing in two parts.

35 Square Foot 11/11

Now I’m diving into 35 Square Foot Mansion. I’ve never been satisfied with the chord progression, so I spent the last three days reharmonizing it. I think it sounds much better — the chords are in the right places now. Here it is in glorious monophonic sound. I’ll sketch over this basic track.

Purple Heart

Just bass and vocal. You can hear the harmonic structure in the music really clearly when it’s this simple. Yum!

Laundromat

Here’s a nice guitar-and-voice version of one of my own favorite songs.

Here’s the sketch process in action. I ditched the organ and the handclaps, redesigned the bass part, and redid the electric guitar. I think this is the definitive version … for now!

Spent the last three days on this one. The tuning continues to improve — these recordings are relentlessly in just intonation rather than equal temperament. I can really hear the difference now, as I get it dialed in. Listen to the Hammond organ — it’s retuned to just intonation.

I danced while performing each part.

Once more, with feeling

This is an entirely new performance. The sketch process I’m using is working beautifully. I’m not trying to perform the final take every time. I’m simply playing the song, each part, again and again. Every time I play it, I get a finer sense of how it goes. This time I speeded it up more, played the bass part on fretless, and dialed in all the tuning at another level. Hope you enjoy — this one tickles me in all the right spots.
